Sodium phenobarbital specifically depresses the motor centers of the cerebral cortex. It has the broadest spectrum of activity against different seizure patterns and is one of the most powerful anticonvulsants available, it is also the least toxic.

ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE:
Oral administration. A dose of 2.0 to 6.0 mg/kg divided into two daily doses in canines is recommended for long-term maintenance. In cats, a dose of 4.0 mg/kg every 12 hours can be used. Monitoring of drug concentration is required 3 weeks from the start of treatment and 2 weeks after changing the dosage.

Contraindications/Precautions:
When it is to be administered as maintenance and it is going to be changed from diazepam to phenobarbital, it should be done cautiously and progressively due to its possible potentiation.
